Before You're Out The Door
THE STORY
I lost my Mom way too early; when she was 53. A few years ago my Dad was going through heart surgery. I spent a lot of time thinking about all of things I still wanted to share with him, and that I wanted to hear from him before it was his time. All went well and I'm fortunate to still have him around.
I think we all eventually go through these same 3 stages:
- As young children- the things we want to talk about with our parents when they're at home with us before they're out the door to work
- As parents- the things we want our children to learn before they're out the door on their own
- As adults- the things we want to share with our parents before they're no longer with us
I really am not thrilled with the line "priceless value". It feels too much like something from my jingle days, perhaps a line from a spot for the grocery store 'Schwegmann's". Maybe I'll replace it some day...
THE LYRICS
_______________________
Dressed for work
Deep in your box scores
One more usual day
Of games and dreams
I talked to that paper
until it floated down
You smiled and said
son tell me later
Now I have to go
I always had
more words than time
Before you went out our door
Crumpled clothes
Thrown on Friday
A high school Saturday
In my own world
I tuned you out
just more background noise
Time revealed
That age brings wisdom
and shone the flaws of youth
You thought there’s much
I hope you’ll learn
before you’re out our door
In tie back gown
just waking up.
One more hospital stay
The games and friends
we talked about
were masking our true thoughts
Years have added
Priceless value
to shared time and words
I hope I’ve told you
what you’ve meant
Before you’re out the door
There’s always been
more words than time
Before we close that door
