Safe In Yourself
THE STORY
We've all been there. We'll all be there again. Someone you think you know...think you know well, turns out to be someone completely different than who you thought they were. They live with a wall around them and only let you see a piece. The piece of them that they think will keep you around. Of course, we all try and hide our flaws, our vulnerability in some form. I don't know. This is a confusing one.
The question also came up recently, "Who is this about?". I think it's a combination of people, including myself at times. There's really a small group of people, if any, that we let see and know who we really are. The other part of this is, I think "I Knew a Boy" sings better than "I Knew a Girl".
THE LYRICS
_______________________________________
I knew a boy.
Thought I knew a boy.
I knew a boy.
Never knew that boy.
The things that you say
are the things that you say.
The words that you won’t say
are making me stay.
The things that you write,
you hold on so tight.
I’m filling my head
with the things you don’t write.
[Doot doot doot da doot doot doot
do doot doot doot da doot doot doot]
(repeat)
I knew a boy.
Thought I knew a boy.
I knew a boy.
Never knew that boy.
You’re safe in yourself
oh so safe in yourself
Built a world of your own
and there’s nobody else
Now you sit on your wall
and you call for a friend
Then retreat safe inside
where that wall never ends.
[Doot doot doot da doot doot doot
do doot doot doot da doot doot doot]
(repeat)
It’s a virtual truth.
It’s a friendship of lies.
In this book of regrets
I can’t tell from your eyes
It’s a circle of doubt
that revolves ‘round my heart.
And I’m looking for hope
in this role that won't start
Safe in yourself
Safe in yourself
Safe in yourself
Alone in yourself
I knew a boy.
Thought I knew a boy.
I knew a boy.
Never knew that boy.
(repeat)
Safe in yourself
Safe in yourself
Safe in yourself
Alone in yourself
